Thirsk is a small market town, the real-life Darrowby of the 'James Herriot' books.
An attractive Market Square (market on Mondays and Saturdays) with a
range of shops, restaurants, pubs, banks etc.
The World of James Herriot across the road from The Gallery.
Swimming baths, horse racing, cinema (the lovingly-restored 'Ritz'), museum.
Pleasant local walks beside Codbeck River.
Thirsk is ideally situated for touring the Yorkshire Dales to the west
and the North York Moors to the east.
Within half an hour - Sutton Bank, Kilburn White Horse, Helmsley
Castle and Rievaulx Abbey more than fill a day out.
All within 40 minutes - to the west, Ripon, Knaresborough,
Harrogate and Richmond are worth a visit and are gateways to the
beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
Much of the North York Moors National Park is accessible within
an hour's drive, including parts of the spectacular Heritage Coast,
Whitby and many charming villages.
