Things to Do Around Thirsk

Thirsk is a small market town, the real-life Darrowby of the 'James Herriot' books.

  • An attractive Market Square (market on Mondays and Saturdays) with a range of shops, restaurants, pubs, banks etc.
  • The World of James Herriot across the road from The Gallery.
  • Swimming baths, horse racing, cinema (the lovingly-restored 'Ritz'), museum.
  • Pleasant local walks beside Codbeck River.

Thirsk is ideally situated for touring the Yorkshire Dales to the west and the North York Moors to the east.

  • Within half an hour - Sutton Bank, Kilburn White Horse, Helmsley Castle and Rievaulx Abbey more than fill a day out.
  • All within 40 minutes - to the west, Ripon, Knaresborough, Harrogate and Richmond are worth a visit and are gateways to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.
  • Much of the North York Moors National Park is accessible within an hour's drive, including parts of the spectacular Heritage Coast, Whitby and many charming villages.
